Summit Review 2005
By Jeremy Johanson

Conclusion
Prevention is better than cure with spa being a necessity for life. Education is thus of the utmost importance, in every domain and at all levels. Everyone – management, therapists and clients – must understand what their body is all about, incorporating the art of healthy living into their daily lives, as well as the lives of those around them. Dieter Buchner, Jesslyn Lim and Yvette Licup highlighted the need to pay particular attention to maintaining therapists, so that they are properly developed as healers and not exploited. In addition to education, as well as exercise and nutrition, we need to address the issues of stress management and social/spiritual interaction, taking into account lifestyle and psycho-social factors.

As we induce a lifestyle change and inverse the pyramid from a sickness model of health (20%), to a more sustainable one of wellness (80%), we must never lose sight of the fact that individualized quality care is a necessity. ‘Heart’, listening, caring, nurturing and knowledge will be the driving force of this future multi-billion dollar industry where we will need to understand the healer’s notion of ‘enough’ and the ‘right’ way, versus ‘high profits’. We will also learn to integrate the energy layers of the body into the presently treated physical. The biggest challenge will thus be creating a system that can manage and respect individual healers responsible for taking care of individual lives, one at a time.

It was remarked in closing that if we do not start now, in the long-term we are doomed as a species. The evolution of our collective consciousness starts with an attitude shift that can change the course of history, the start of which we can thank Michael Loh for his vision. His commitment has sparked a fire that could well signal the beginning of a weller world. In our present times where the head seems to have been disconnected from the heart, Andrew Jones eloquently concluded: “We are messengers. People trying to hope that the world has a future.” With Marc Cohen ending: “Don’t just spread the message. Live It!”
